Madeline Mathews

Maddie was born and raised in Houston and joined WattThompson in 2014. She was a Plan II Honors major at the University of Texas at Austin and attended the University of Texas School of Law prior to working as an oil and gas attorney in San Antonio from 2011 to 2014. At WattThompson, Maddie focuses her practice on oil, gas and energy law, working on both litigation and transactional matters. She has a strong background in title, including analyzing and interpreting real property conveyances, oil and gas leases, assignments, deeds of trusts, court proceedings involving family law, probate law, and real property law, as well as calculating ownership interests. Maddie has assisted in drafting various lease forms and assignments, as well as surface use and subsurface easements and a variety of due diligence projects which involve the examination of joint operating agreements, farmout agreements, purchase and sale agreements, and participation agreements.

Oil and Gas Transactions

  • Represented large mineral and working interest owner in the negotiation of a $200 million acquisition in the Bakken Shale.
  • Represented mineral owners in South Texas in determination of royalty burdens and duties under various agreements.
  • Represented various oil and gas companies, mineral owners, and landowners regarding various upstream agreements, surface issues, royalty issues, pipeline easements, lease negotiations and other oil and gas lease issues.
  • Prepared original drilling title opinions, supplemental title opinions and division order title opinions for oil and gas exploration and production activities.

Energy Disputes and Litigation

  • Represented large oil and gas company in a multi-million dollar lawsuit with respect to acquisition of various properties.
  • Represented large oil and gas company as non-operator in a lawsuit for breach of a farmout agreement.
  • Represented various large mineral and working interest owners in connection with the determination of royalty interest deductions in Louisiana and Texas.
  • Represented oil and gas companies and various mineral owners and oil and gas companies regarding title disputes, royalties, shut-in royalties, and related issues.

Pro Bono Work

  • Represented a homeowner in obtaining a Small Estate Affidavit in order to transfer title for tax purposes.
